Fasting vs. HbA1c: What's the Difference?
Different tests provide different information about how your body manages glucose:
- Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS): Measures blood sugar levels after a strict overnight fast of 8-12 hours. It shows current blood sugar levels at that specific time.
- Post-Prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS): Measures blood sugar levels exactly 2 hours after having a meal. It shows how well your body clears glucose after eating.
- HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin): Measures the percentage of hemoglobin that is coated with sugar. It provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months and does NOT require fasting.
Who Needs Diabetes Screening?
Regular screening is highly recommended if you experience any of the following symptoms or risk factors:
- Frequent urination (polyuria) and extreme thirst (polydipsia)
- Unexplained weight loss or excessive fatigue
- Family history of diabetes or high blood pressure
- Sedentary lifestyle and overweight conditions
- Age 35 years or older (yearly screenings recommended)
Preparation Guidelines
Fasting Sugar Requirement: Do not consume any food or beverages (except plain water) for a strict window of 8 to 12 hours before the sample is drawn. For HbA1c, you may have the test at any time of the day without fasting constraints.
